Here’s your step-by-step guide for how to hang felt nursery wall decor safely, cleanly, and beautifully. Take your time and have some fun with it!

Why Felt Nursery Wall Decor Is So Popular

Felt banners and pennants are trending in modern nurseries for a few reasons:

  • Lightweight → easy to hang without anchors
  • Soft and safe → perfect for above a crib or changing table
  • Textural → adds dimension without visual clutter
  • Timeless → pairs with classic, boho, modern, or minimalist rooms
  • Giftable → a keepsake piece families treasure

Whether you’re going soft pink, baby blue, neutral, or other classic baby colors & themes, felt wall decor instantly elevates the room.

Step-by-Step: How to Hang Felt Nursery Wall Decor

1. Turn on Your Favorite Song and Grab a Latte

2. Start by Choosing the Right Wall Location

Before you grab your materials, decide where the banner should go. Consider:

  • Above the crib (but high enough that baby can’t reach)
  • Above a dresser or changing table
  • On a gallery wall with prints and keepsakes
  • Across a shelf or peg rail
  • On the inside of a reading nook

Tip: Hold the banner up and take a picture from across the room before you hang it— it’s easier to see proportions on camera and get a feel for the right position. Alternatively, you can mark an outline of the banner shape on the wall with painters tape to get a sense for what it could look like.

3. Decide Which Hanging Hardware You Want

Felt banners are extremely lightweight (ours are all less than a 1/2 pound), so you have a wide range of excellent damage-free options.

Option A: Command Hooks/Hangers/Strips/Velcro/Sticky Tack (Most Popular Approach)

  • Ideal for both banners with metal hanging loops and those without
  • Removable with no wall damage
  • Strong enough for wide felt banners

Option B (for banners with built-in metal loops): Small Hanger Nails, Tacks, or Brass Picture Hooks (The Minor Damage Option)

  • Can give a high-end, framed-art look and works beautifully with brass, gold, or wood hooks
  • Still lightweight enough that drilled-in anchors aren’t needed
  • Can bring extra peace of mind if you're concerned about adhesion to your wall/paint material

4. Measure, Level, and Mark the Placement

Once location has been decided - for clean, professional presentation:

  1. Measure the banner width/height and distance between loops for banners with built-in loops
  2. Mark your center points on the wall with an erasable pencil (i.e. center of the changing table) and then mark where each hanging loop or adhesive strips will land
  3. Use a level (or level app) to ensure both marks line up
  4. Measure again - your future self will thank you!

Tips:  Aim to hang banners at least 6–12 inches above any furniture and centered vertically between major elements. For extra precision, you can use painter’s tape to visualize the final height and width.

5. Hang the Banner or Pennant

  • Stick the mounting strips (or gently hammer the nails)
  • Apply pressure for at least 30 seconds
    • Note: Check the adhesive instructions as some products recommend you let it set for up to an hour before hanging
  • Don't forget to erase your pencil marks later if they're still visible!
  • Step back and admire your hard work!

6. Style Around It

Once it’s hung, you can build a beautiful scene around it:

  • Add framed art prints on either side
  • Layer a shelf above or below
  • Pair with soft décor like bows, books, and plush toys
  • Use complementary colors (neutrals, blush, earth tones, warm woods, gold accents)

Felt banners work well with all types of nurseries ranging from a Neutral boho or Minimalist Scandinavian looks to classic Woodland or Safari.

Common Questions (FAQ)

Will felt wall banners damage my walls?

No - when hung with damage-free hanging products, they'll leave no marks and remove cleanly.

Do felt banners wrinkle if rolled?

Felt is naturally wrinkle-resistant. If needed, gently unroll and lay flat before hanging and it'll be flat within just a few minutes.
